About professional consultation and supervision
My training and experience as a supervisor
I have trained as a supervisor with Relate and have been
a supervisor of adult counselling, young people's counselling and family counselling.
I supervise counsellors at Relate East Staffs and have supervised counselling
diploma students. I have undertaken further training in supervision and I gained
a Certificate in Professional Studies (Supervision) from Leicester University
in 2006. In July 2006 I became accredited as a supervisor of individuals with
the BACP.
Whilst my supervision trainings have been psychodynamically
and systemically oriented, I am interested in negotiating cross-theoretical
supervision. Hawkins and Shoet's process model of supervision, Heinz Kohut's
self psychology and Brigid Proctor's normative, (in)formative and restorative
tasks of supervision theoretically inform my work.
How I work as a professional consultant/ supervisor
Whilst I recognize that it is possible to differentiate
between consultation and supervision, for my purpose here I use the two terms
as interchangeable.
My two expectations of you as a potential supervisee
are that you will be a member of a professional organization and abide by its
ethical framework or code; and that you will have professional indemnity insurance.
At an initial consultation we would discuss
what you want from regular consultations with me, focussing on how your needs
and your clients' needs can be met and on your expectations of me and of our
working together. We would clarify our respective responsibilities and those
of any third parties involved. We would negotiate payment, and duration and
frequency of supervisions, by taking into account your professional context(s),
caseload, experience and accreditation requirements.
At the end of the first consultation I would
suggest that we give each other a week or so to consider whether to proceed
with a supervisory relationship. If we agree to work together, we would negotiate
a contract between us that I would type up and we would both sign. I would
also suggest that we try supervision for at least three sessions and then review
whether we would wish to continue working together. This would enable us both
to reflect on our joint participation in supervision and to listen to feedback
from each other.
My working style is collegial and respectful
of your autonomy, whilst recognizing that there are asymmetries of responsibilities,
roles, age, gender etc. that are current in a supervisory relationship.
If you would like further information or to
discuss having private supervision with me, please contact me.
